UX design for Medical/Pharmaceutical Technologies
The FDA, Health Canada, and other regulatory bodies have strict, demanding sets of requirements and guidelines for the design, development, manufacturing, instruction, and use of medical equipment and devices, with stringency increasing with each class of medical device. As such, it is crucial that all user interaction and interface design and implementation be done with utmost care and adherence to the many standards and requirements set forth by these supervising entitities. Furthermore, consideration of the usability requirements and limitations, context(s) of use, clinical workflows, and most of all, users, demands experience and painstaking research. Minimzing risk to the operator and patient is of chief concern, and as a result, UX design with such high stakes is not a straight forward process. In order to be successful, a collaboration between clincial engineers, product designers, ux designers, hardware engineers, software developers- and end users- is needed.
